Europe's Moment of Blinding Strategic Clarity

ANDREW A. MICHTA

European leaders are finally beginning to admit to themselves that Putin's goal is to decompose NATO and alter Europe's normative framework. But will they do anything about it?
No, of course not. They're Y'urp-peons, after all. Even as they recognize that Putin is a threat and that Islamic-sponsored terrorism is an existential threat, they continue to cut their defense budgets and welcome more immigrants.

The author notes that today 75% of NATO's tasks are shouldered by Uncle Sugar, compared to only half a decade ago. Of course -- we've acquiesced and the Euros don't want to bother. Want the Euros to take on the heavy lifting? Walk away. Until we credibility threaten to do just that nothing will change.

#2  Hmm - Western Europe going the way of the Western Roman Empire, interesting comparison.

#1  By the 80's Western Europe had amassed a combined population and GDP equal to the United States. It's been military welfare for generations. I'd bet that in the future, historians will make a legitimate case that it was a futile waste of manpower and resources to resurrect a dying civilization on the scale of Justinian trying to reconstruct the faded and moribund Western Roman Empire. The ruling caste seemed to have forgotten that our ancestors either left or were thrown out of the place to begin with, all with good reason.
