China bolsters border security over Islamism fears
2014-10-28
China has begun stricter border checks in a bid to stop Islamists from joining terror cells in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Following recent reports of Uighurs fighting for the Islamic State (IS) and arrests in Indonesia, police have started gathering and sharing terrorism intelligence with neighboring countries.

China is expected to pass a new anti-terror law this week that would include more stringent controls of the internet, information sharing across state agencies and greater cooperation with other countries.

In May, Beijing started a one-year 'strike hard' campaign in Xinjiang province amid a series of deadly attacks that have left hundreds dead this year. Uighur militants have reportedly increased connections with international Islamist groups, which has coincided with IS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi calling China a violator of Muslim rights.

"Your brothers all over the world are waiting for your rescue, and are anticipating your brigades," Al-Baghdadi said during a speech in Mosul, Iraq on July 4.

Last month, Iraqi security forces released images of what appeared to be the first captured Chinese IS militant, and in September Indonesian police arrested and charged four Uighurs for working with Islamist terror groups in central Sulawesi.
