| Pakistan Jamaat questions its govt's silence over Nizami verdict |

| [Dhaka Tribune] Jamaat-e-Islami ... The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independentbranch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores... Pakistain has condemned the verdict and questioned Pakistain government's silence about the death sentence for Bangladesh Jamaat Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami ...During the liberation war of 1971, Nizami formed the Al-Badr Force and acted as its supreme commander. The Al-Badr militia took active part in rape, extortion, looting and killing of Bangladeshis who supported the liberation, including a pre-planned massacre on December 14, 1971, when the Al-Badr militia along with Pakistan Army rounded up hundreds of doctors, professors, writers, and other Bengali intellectuals, and executed them... . In a statement published on Pakistain Jamaat's website, its Ameer Sirajul Haq ...current head of the Pak Jamaat-e-Islami. Siraj was born in 1962 and entered politics shortly after that... said it was most unfortunate that the Pakistain government was maintaining a "criminal silence" over the convictions of "patriotic Paks who had sided with the Pak Army." "The decision of a fake court was the height of tyranny and death sentence had been given to a totally innocent person. He said that such measures could not prolong the rule of BD Premier Haseena Wajid [sic]," the website read. Sirajul also claimed that Zulfikar Ali Bhutto ...9th PM of Pakistain from 1973 to 1977, and 4th President of Pakistain from 1971 to 1973. He was the founder of the Pakistain Peoples Party (PPP). His eldest daughter, Benazir Bhutto, would also serve as hereditary PM. In a coup led by General Zia-ul-Haq, Bhutto was removed from office and was executed in 1979 for authorizing the murder of a political opponent... and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had agreed to not have any war crimes trials. |
