#3  Ed in Texas, my guess is the laser itself is below decks in a climate controlled area. The beam travels up a beam tube to the 'turret'. So the only real operating environment problem is the end of the barrel which is probably covered most of the time.

Where I work that is how we separate the lasers from the clean-room. I'm guessing the NAVY does the same thing but backwards (insert joke here).
