Microsoft has enlisted a series of "crime-fighting" robots, called K5 androids, to patrol the company's Silicon Valley campus. Standing at five-feet tall and weighing 300-pounds, fitted with an impressive suite of alarms, high-definition cameras, microphones, heat detectors and laser scanners that allow the machines to assess any potential dangers. The K5 android also has Wi-Fi capabilities, weather sensors, speakers and GPS. In the event they do encounter trouble, the robots will flag up the incident by sounding an alarm and signaling back to the command center.
The robots guard a predefined perimeter, and are capable of navigating an ever-changing environment, avoiding human beings and other potential obstacles. The K5s can operate for up to 24 hours on a single charge. Once the battery runs dry, the machines automatically return to base for a recharge, which typically only takes around 20 minutes.
