11 killed in Bukidnon bus blast
2014-12-10
Eleven were killed and more than 40 injured when a bus exploded in Bukidnon province Tuesday evening. Most of the victims were students, who were about to go home when the blast occurred. Nine of the 11 fatalities, five men and four women, died on the spot, and two others died later.

A police spokesperson said an improvised bomb with mobile phone as trigger mechanism was used in the explosion. She said the bomb was apparently hidden in a sack placed in the vehicle's overhead baggage rack.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack that occurred more than a month after another bus also exploded in Bukidnon injuring four. The bus firm had been receiving extortion letters demandin protection money.

Superintendent Bernardo Mendoza, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office in Northern Mindanao, said the bombing appeared to be the handiwork of the breakaway group of the Cotabato-based Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters.

Ten people were killed when a bomb exploded aboard a bus operated by the same company in Mindanao in 2010, which was blamed on an extortion scheme also linked to Muslim extremists.
