Abu Sayyaf frees Malaysian hostage
2014-12-11
[Mindanao Examiner] Abu Sayyaf militants have freed a kidnapped Malaysian fish breeder after six months in captivity, but the group is still holding a Malaysian policeman in the southern Philippine province of Sulu where ransom negotiations are ongoing.

Chan Sai Chuin was reportedly spirited out of Sulu on a speedboat by Malaysian negotiators and has returned to Sabah where his anxious family waited. He was kidnapped along with a Filipino worker on June 16 this year. The fate of the unidentified Filipino is not known.

A Filipino negotiator, who is also a Moro National Liberation Front leader, reportedly helped in the Malaysian negotiation, but it was not known how much ransom was paid to the Abu Sayyaf.

The Abu Sayyaf is still holding Malaysian policeman Kons Zakiah Aleip, who was seized on June 12 this year following a battle in Sabah that killed another policeman. Aside from him, the militants are still holding captive Japanese treasure hunter Katayama Mamaito, and a few Filipinos.
