Former Qaddafi brigade member leader sentenced to death in Misrata
2014-12-11 | |
[Libya Herald] The court in Misrata has sentenced a former Qadaffy brigade leader to death. Salah Al-Fatouri Salah Al-Shushan was found guilty by the Khoms Criminal Court, which for security reasons meets in Misrata, of having having attacked Misrata with a convoy of eight tanks in 2011. He was also found guilty of bombing and killing civilians in the city.
A number of former Qadaffy regime figures have been found guilty of human rights ...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless... crimes in Misrata and sentenced to death. None, however, has been executed so far. In Libyan law, the death sentence has to be endorsed by the High Court, and the process can take years. Libyan law also incorporates the Sharia practice whereby a murderer sentenced to death can be forgiven by members of the victim's family, in which case the sentence is reduced to life imprisonment.
