This Tilt-Rotor Aircraft Could Be The Future Of The US Army's Helicopter Fleet
2015-01-22
Bell's V-280, which combines a combat helicopter's fuselage with tilt-rotors, would basically be a Black Hawk that can adjust its thrust to fly like a fixed-wing aircraft once it's airborne.
Once again the Army wants to build an advanced helicopter. Like the Comanche, which failed. And the Arapaho, which failed. And the Cheyenne, which failed. Each cost billions of dollars in R & D. So pardon me if I'm a little skeptical about the V-280; we've seen this movie.

#7  Joint Multi-Role, why the name itself is worth $20million.

Replaces the Tomcat and Warthog Blackhawk and Apache.

#5  Why not dream big and make it like a chinook with rotors in front and back. They had something like that in the latest Tom Cruise sci-fi movie and it looked pretty cool.

And if you got it to work I imagine you'd have a lot of lift. And if you didn't get it to work it looks really cool on the powerpoint slides.

#2  We simply can't have the services using 'like' aircraft. Each must have it's own unique platforms, with their own unique funding requirements, R&R, contractor, and sustainment tails. How could you possibly 'cook the books' if there were common standards btwn services which could be compared, contrasted, and held to account ?
