| Gunmen Kill Security Chief in Libya's Sirte |

| [AnNahar] Armed men rubbed out Thursday the head of security in the Islamist-held coastal city of Sirte, hometown of slain dictator Moamer Qadaffy, a security source said. Colonel Senussi Kaiba was killed along with his driver when gunnies shot up their car in a residential area of the city, the source said. Security services were placed on high alert and a manhunt launched for the assailants who fled after the attack, the source added. Two days earlier a local administration official escaped unhurt after gunnies shot up him in a similar attack. Sirte is in the hands of Islamist militias, including Ansar al-Sharia ...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libyaand Yemen, with the Libyan versions currently most active. Tunisia's Shabaab al-Tawhid started out an Ansar al-Sharia and changed its name in early 2014. It still uses the old name now and then, probably because the stationery's not all used up and the web site hasn't expired yet... , which the U.N. added to its terror list in November over links to al-Qaeda and for running camps for the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. The Fajr Libya (Libya Dawn ...aka Fajr Libya, the Islamist operation launched to counter that of General Khalifa Haftar (Operation Dignity). It is made up of the Libya Shield militia (Misrata and Moslem Brotherhood), Libya Revolutionaries Operations Room (Moslem Brotherhood), and Tripoli Brigade (close to Abdul Hakim Belhaj, head of Al-Watan party). Financing and moral support come from Turkey and Qatar... ) alliance of Islamist-backed militias is also present in the city which lies 500 kilometers (310 miles) east of Tripoli ...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn... More than three years since Qadaffy was ousted and killed in a NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all.... -backed uprising, oil-rich Libya is awash with weapons and has two rival governments and powerful militias battling for territory. Fajr Libya declared a ceasefire last week after an agreement at a meeting in Geneva on a roadmap to form a unity government. |
