| Cause of East Village Blast May Have Been Improper Use of a Gas Line |

| [NYT] When the manager of Sushi Park, a restaurant in the East Village that was destroyed Thursday in an explosion and fire, alerted the building's landlord that afternoon to an odor of gas, it was not the first time that people who worked there had been concerned about how gas was flowing into the building. The restaurant's owner, Hyeonil Kim, 59, said in an interview on Friday that he had wondered how the apartments upstairs in the five-story building at 121 Second Avenue had been getting hot water and gas for cooking. The only gas line coming into the building had been dedicated to his restaurant, he said. Well now you know. Better luck with Sushi Park-II. |

| #3 A drill, tap set, plus a few hardware store fittings and hoses. Don't really need a shutoff valve because the upstairs folk will always need gas. Yeah, that'll do it. Can't find the teflon tape or pipe dope in the store? So just 'torque' it a little tighter until I can't hear any more loud hissing noises. Should have done this a few years ago, though, when my hearing was better. |

| #2 I still remember the time I snuck home from work in the middle of the day, picked up my single-line, single-handset home phone and heard part of a very long long distance conversation which was being charged to my account. Somebody else in my apartment had tapped my line to make "free" calls. |
