Kurdish fighters repel suicide attack by ISIS south of Kobane
2015-04-13
[ARA] On Sunday, the People's Protection Units (YPG) repelled two suicide car bombs planned by extremists of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) southeast of Kobane in the province of Aleppo, northern Syria.

Speaking to ARA News in Kobane, Noureddin Gaban, a fighter in the YPG ranks reported that the joint forces (YPG, FSA, and Peshmerga) destroyed two car bombs before they reached their targets in the village of Kok Tepe (40 km southeast of Kobane).

"The two car bombs were destroyed by the Peshmerga heavy weapons," he added. "The huge explosions that followed the destruction of the cars indicated the existence of large amounts of explosive materials in them."

"The Islamic State now pursues the strategy of targeting headquarters of the Kurdish forces in the countryside of Kobane with suicide bombings and improvised car bombs. We are aware of this strategy, that's why the Peshmerga artillery observes targets any suspected vehicles before they approach the areas regained from the terrorist group," the military source told ARA News.

In the meantime, a YPG source reported that the joint forces gained control of two armored vehicles loaded with a great deal of explosives in Tel Qarya, killing five members of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS), and seizing 120 mortars, ammunition, and several Katyusha rockets.

Friday, the joint forces seized the villages of Kok Tepe and Jalabiya southeast of Kobane following fierce clashes with IS militants.
