| Helmand Mosque Siege Ends After Police Kill Assailants |

| [Tolo News] The Mosque siege in Lashkargah, lovely provincial capital of Helmand ...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan... , ended Wednesday afternoon when security forces bumped off two assailants who had stormed the building earlier in the day and taken a number of people hostage, officials said. The incident happened at around 10:30 am when two would-be jacket wallahs, dressed in police uniforms, stormed a Grand Mosque where about 50 members of Ulema Council and local security officials were holding a meeting on violence, insecurity and insurgency. Provincial authorities told TOLOnews that three coppers and three non-combatants were killed during the incident and five other police members were maimed. The siege ended at 1:30 pm when both assailants, who had explosives strapped to their bodies and hand grenades on them, were bumped off by the security forces. At the time of the siege, holy mans from the provincial Hajj and Religious Affairs Directorate were hosting the meeting. According to officials, the attackers also fired at the governor's office, which is adjacent to the Mosque. |
