[AlAhram] Health ministry figures reveal the toll in the last year of hard boy attacks in North Sinai, where Egypt's army is fighting a jihadist insurgency Within the past year, 643 civilians and military have been killed and injured in North Sinai, according to official hospital records, the Ministry of Health announced. According to an official statement issued Wednesday by Tarek Khater, the undersecretary of the health ministry in North Sinai, the number of those shot and admitted to hospitals -- civilians or security forces -- in the governorate reached 466. The statement added that 177 -- civilians and security forces combined -- were killed, according to hospital records. A security source told the state-owned MENA news agency that 70 coppers were killed and 107 others injured in North Sinai in the last six months only. Egypt's army is currently fighting a campaign against a decade-long hard boy insurgency in North Sinai. Militants have killed hundreds of police and army personnel in the past year and a half in North Sinai, while the authorities have announced that hundreds of snuffies have been killed in military campaigns in the governorate. The Islamist group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis has grabbed credit for most attacks against security forces in Sinai. |
