2,000 villagers flee after Abu Sayyaf attack
2015-06-10
[Inquirer] Some 2,000 families fled eight villages in Maluso town of Basilan province after Saturday's Abu Sayyaf attack that left their water system heavily damaged.

Village chief Ariel Castillo said, "We have been receiving extortion demand from this (group). It’s not the first time they blasted our pipes. Last Saturday was the third time and it was the worst. Two major pipes destroyed."

Castillo said the residents were afraid of dying from thirst, if not from bullets, after the terrorists killed and decapitated a local militiaman. The pipelines were supplying potable water to eight of the town’s twenty villages.

Domiciano Delgado, an administrator for Maluso Water District, said the agency was determined to restore the water supply but was worried about the security of its crew. He said, "As of now, we were not able to repair the destroyed pipes because of security reasons."

Delgado thought the attack could be a result of Mawad's refusal to yield to extortion.
