Ky. man arrested after shooting down $1800 drone hovering over sunbathing daughter

[WASHINGTONTIMES] A Kentucky man shot down an $1800 drone hovering over his sunbathing daughter and was then enjugged
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
and charged with first degree criminal mischief and first degree wanton endangerment.

"My daughter comes in and says, 'Dad, there's a drone out here flying," William H. Merideth, 47, told a local Fox News affiliate reported Tuesday. The Bullitt County father shot at the drone, which crashed in a field near his yard Sunday night.

The owner of the drone claims he was only trying to take pictures of a friend's house, the station reported.

"I went and got my shotgun and I said, 'I'm not going to do anything unless it's directly over my property,'" Mr. Merideth said, noting that the drone briefly disappeared when his daughter waved it off. "Within a minute or so, here it came. It was hovering over top of my property, and I shot it out of the sky. I didn't shoot across the road, I didn't shoot across my neighbor's fences, I shot directly into the air."

Mr. Merideth said four men tried to confront him after the drone was shot out of the sky, but then changed their minds when they saw his personal firearms.

#12  A good slingshot is quiet and one can get fairly proficient with practice. It shoots a lead or steel ball that is about a 38 cal. The range isn't too great if the drone was hovering as reported--it is just about right for a slingshot. I've put these pellets through tin cans with ease at around 20-25 yards.

#11  Careful, some of those will still crack the air; sound like a .22

#10  The answer to this problem will likely be high powered air rifles, quiet, no flash and given they can kill small game, can take out light electronics with ease.

#9  So protecting your daughter from pervert peeping toms is a crime now?

I'd love to be on this jury.

#7  If they really were looking at a house, the camera would not have seen Dad protecting his daughter. They would not have known where the AA came from, only heard a single thump. I'm guessing Dad knew what he was doing, in consideration of shooting straight up, and not only needed just one shot but had a selection of which shot would be right.

#6  Under US law, property owners are required to allow unrestricted airspace access to any vehicle under the jurisdiction of the FAA, the US military, or the US government.

I picked this off the internet. Can't vouch for the legality but it passes a smell test.

I would think anything above my property within shotgun range would be fair game. Especially something with a camera flying over my sunbathing daughter.

#5  And have lots of multi-colored LEDS going. A fun hobby, I recommend, mine cost about $95.00 but the ChingLish instructions were worth the price of admission.

#4  BIG market for anti-drone drones. Paint them black with no visible numbers or ID.

#1  This will only become more common as drones are used more. Anything 500 feet and under is private property and eligible to be shot from the sky.

Sound fair?
