[RFE/RL] An imam in Dagestan region has been killed. Russia's Investigative Committee says two masked men gunned down Magomed Khidirov early in the morning of September 9 while he was on his way to a mosque in Novy Kurush. The village is located in the western Khasavyurt district bordering Chechnya. The killing of Khidirov came three weeks after another Islamic cleric, Zamirbek Makhmutov was gunned down in the Stavropol region neighboring Dagestan.
Imams appointed by the official Spiritual Directorates of Muslims in Russia usually support government's policies and propagate moderate Islam.
