Russian Air Force targets ISIS targets near Raqqa leaving at least 12 militants dead
2015-10-03
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] Russian warplanes carried out Arclight airstrikes on Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terror group's main Syrian stronghold.

At least 12 fanatics of the terror group were killed in the air raids carried out in Raqqa city.

According to Russia's defense ministry a training camp of the terror group was targeted near the village of Maadan Jadid, 45 miles east of Raqqa city and a camouflaged command post at Kasrat Faraj southwest of the city.

The training camp and command post were struck with a precision strike launched form an altitude of over 5,000 meters, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov, the ministry front man, said the Arclight airstrike was one of a dozen conducted by Russia in Syria on Thursday during 18 sorties.

"The targeting systems of those planes allows for hitting ground targets with absolute precision, which was proven yesterday during combat missions targeting ISIS infrastructure," hKnoashkenkov quoted by Russia Today said. "We can use this type of aircraft to deliver strikes anywhere in Syria."

Overnight, the Russian Air Force conducted 10 sorties and hit seven targets in Syria, Konashenkov said. Over the 24 hours the planes bombed a field camp in Aleppo province, a logistics center in Idlib province and a command point at a fortified facility in Hama province.

In the meantime, the ISIS Death Eaters posted a tweet warning 'Death to Putin: We are coming #soon' with a picture of Moscow's St Basil's Cathedral in flames, according to the SITE intelligence group.

#12  This is interesting.

A Look At Russia's Version Of The A-10

From the link:
"The Russian air force will use the Frogfoots to support the Assad regime in the same way the USAF is using the A-10 Warthog to support the Iraqi government," one veteran U.S. Air Force aviator told me. Another senior Air Force official agreed. "Frogfoots are the best air-to-ground platform for this type of fight for sure."

WNU editor: There are only a dozen of these planes in Syria .... so I doubt that they can have a significant impact. in the short term .... but I suspect that in certain key ground battles and/or in concentrated operations .... they will shift the battle in favour of the Syrian regime.

#11  Soviet/Russian Guided Bombs

But I doubt that either pencilneck or Putin care about civilian casualties. What? The world might think less of them?

#10  I think a more practical reason is the Russians don't have many guided weapons. Could you imagine the uproar if a western nation used dumb bombs in an urban area.

#9  There's a chapter in Victor Suvorov's "Inside Soviet Army" that explains why Russians believe in cheap, quickly mass produced weapons.

Syria Air Campaign Raises Questions About Russian Capabilities

Russia’s days-old air campaign in Syria is giving U.S. officials and analysts their first in-depth look at Russian capabilities in decades, and it has some wondering whether Russia is able to effectively use its most advanced weapons.

“You can actually tell that the ammunition they’re using — while I wouldn’t call it older, necessarily — they are a type of dumb ammunition,” said Sim Tack, director of analytical support at Stratfor, a U.S.-based global intelligence company.

#7  You see multiple impacts/smoke towers when they show impact. Not in all the videos released by the Russians, but most. There is no reason to release more than one LGB at a time it and risks bomb fratricide. Also notice the bracketing of targets w/o actually hitting them.

As far as the FAE fireball shown, it obscures whether one or multiple are dropped. It also obscures how close/far to the target it may have hit.

the second cut footage and the last a video of the aftermath of an impact.

They both show at least 2 sequential bomb impacts in an urban area. No reason to use LBGs that way. Lots of reasons if dumb bombs.

#6  I see no evidence from the video of iron bombs. In the first video I saw FAE bombs, which the Rooshuns are using, the second cut footage and the last a video of the aftermath of an impact.

Not saying they are not using them, but I am saying your video fails to show it.

#4  Videos tell a different story. While some targets may be attacked with LBGs, the vast majority of released videos (both airborne and on the ground) show 2-6 dumb bombs dropped from medium altitude from a straight and level bomb run.

#3  Russian bombs seem to have a CEP of several hundred meters.

Russians are current[y using LGBs with a CEP of two, they say.
