Kurds launch campaign to liberate Yezidi region
2015-10-28
[ARA News] ERBIL – Backed by the U.S.-led coalition, Peshmerga forces in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq stormed the Shingal area in Nineveh province, military sources reported.

Shingal area, where thousands of Yezidis used to reside, has been under the control of the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) since August 3, 2014.

Speaking to ARA News in Shingal, Yezidi fighter Aziz Mishko said that the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, backed by the U.S.-led warplanes, have launched a massive military operation on the southern areas of the ISIS-held Shingal in a bid to liberate the region from the terror group.

The source added that dozens of Syrian Kurdish fighters, supported by heavy machine guns and cars, arrived Saturday to Shingal area west of Mosul to participate in the anti-ISIS key battle,” he added.

Mishko pointed out that more than 10 military vehicles carrying Syrian Kurdish fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) have crossed Tel Musharraf border area to the northern Iraqi region of Shingal.

The same source indicated that the Syrian Kurdish fighters are trying to coordinate with the Peshmerga forces to regain Shingal from the extremist group.

Noteworthy, ISIS seized control of the Yezidi region of Shingal after taking over the city of Mosul in the summer of 2014. Thousands of Yezidi Kurds have fled; hundreds were killed and thousands more have been taken into captivity, mostly women and young girls
