DOD blimp turns into slo-mo cruise missile, causes 1000s of power outages |
2015-10-29 |
An unmanned Defense Department blimp that houses a state-of-the-art radar system (designed to detect incoming cruise missiles) became detached from its moorings at Aberdeen, MD and drifted north through Pennsylvania for hours Wednesday. Some 6,700 feet of steel cable dragged below the blimp, knocking out powerlines and causing thens of thousands of outages.
The blimp was designed as a radar station to spot incoming cruise missiles, and was tethered with a 1" cable designed to withstand hurricane force winds. A second blimp of similar design was grounded until the cause of the first blimp's malfunction is determined.
The blimp eventually deflated and came down in 2 pieces in a wooded area in Pennsylvania Wed. afternoon. It is unknown whether the US aircraft that had been shadowing the blimp had anything to do with the blimp's crash landing. |
