Syrian Army retakes Kweires air base
2015-11-29

ALEPPO – Syrian army forces were able to recapture territory from the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) east of a key military airport in Aleppo countryside, army officials reported on Saturday.

The army seized a number of villages and towns on the highway linking Aleppo with the ISIS’s de facto capital of Raqqa.

The areas recaptured are located east of the Kweires air base, which was seized by ISIS on Nov. 10.

After several offensives by the Syrian regime’s army, with support from Russian airstrikes, Iranian forces, and Lebanese Hezbollah militia, the army regained the villages of Kaskis and Agoula (60 km east of Aleppo) along with large swaths of agricultural land, including ISIS tunnels, state agency SANA quoted army officials as saying.

Special units from the army have reportedly dismantled dozens of land-mines planted by the radical group around the Kweires base.

Speaking to ARA News in Aleppo, media activists Muhannad al-Jasim confirmed Wednesday that the army forces have advanced in the vicinity of the Kweires air base, seizing all the farms located on the road between the base and the town of Deir Hafer in the vicinity of Aleppo city.

“After two hours of clashes, in which both sides used medium and heavy weapons, ISIS militants withdrew towards Deir Hafer and villages near the Kweires base,” al-Jasim added.

Syria security forces stationed at the Kweires air base targeted the ISIS-held cities of al-Bab and Deir Hafer with rockets and artillery shells.

In the meantime, Russian warplanes launched four airstrikes on ISIS’s positions in the vicinity of Deir Hafer, causing the destruction of a machinegun (14. 5) and a troop carrier, without knowing the death toll in the group’s ranks.

The Syrian regime and its allies have also made gains against ISIS in southeastern Homs.

Also on Saturday, pro-regime troops waged an offensive against moderate rebels in the coastal province of Latakia, recapturing several villages in the province, local sources reported.
