The Assyrian Network for Human Rights (ANHR) said in a statement that 25 Christian hostages were released by ISIS and arrived to their hometown of Tel Temir in the countryside of Hasakah on Wednesday. “A bus carrying 25 Assyrian hostages has arrived in Tel Temir. They were received by the archbishop Afram Ithnael and a number of Assyrian figures,” the network reported. The source added that 14 of the hostages were from the village of Tel Shamiram, 10 others were from the village of Tel Jazeera and one of them was from the village of Qabr Shamiya. Those villages are located in the vicinity of Tel Temir town. In February, militants of the Islamic State stormed a number of Christian villages in the area. Subsequent to fierce clashes with Kurdish forces and allied Assyrian fighters, the radical group took more than 230 civilians as hostages before its withdrawal. ISIS has earlier released several batches of Christian hostages after negotiations with Assyrian figures, supported by Arab tribal mediators in Hasakah province. | |
