DAMASCUS – Subsequent to reaching an agreement with the Syrian regime’s army, militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) starter to evacuate their strongholds in the southern suburb of Damascus, activists reported on Thursday.

The radical group and the regime’s army reached an agreement earlier this week, entailing the withdrawal of ISIS militants from Damascus suburb towards Raqqa–the ISIS de facto capital in northeastern Syria.

“Dozens of vehicles carrying ISIS militants were seen existing the al-Qadam district in the southern suburb of Damascus towards the highway that leads to Raqqa,” media activist Ismael al-Shami told ARA News in Damascus.

“This is the first batch of ISIS fighters withdrawing from Damascus, as the group is expected to further evacuate the districts of At-Tal and al-Hajar al-Aswad in accordance with the recently reached agreement between the group and the pro-Assad army,” al-Shami reported.

After taking over several areas in the suburbs of the Syrian capital Damascus, ISIS militants have been locked in fierce clashes with rebel factions and pro-Assad troops.

It is not clear yet which factions would take over those districts after ISIS withdrawal.
