Alaskan Earthquake today |
2016-01-24 |
Paul, are you OK? Alaska hit with aftershock after 7.1-magnitude earthquake. A magnitude-6.8 earthquake [7.1, 6.8 - what's the diff? /sarc] struck early Sunday knocked items off shelves and walls in south-central Alaska and jolted the nerves of residents in this earthquake-prone region. But there were no immediate reports of injuries. The earthquake struck about 1:30 a.m. Alaska time and was centered 53 miles west of Anchor Point in the Kenai Peninsula, which is about 160 miles southwest of Anchorage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. About two hours later, a magnitude-4.3 aftershock hit the Cook Inlet, the agency said. |

#9 Yuuup, the lights were in the rough strategic direction of NE Pacific, including but not limited to Alaska. As a general rule - the bigger the EQ Mag, the bigger the Light Ball(s). |

#6 Brief minor rumblings or shakes felt here in Guam - real show were the big light balls, + "lines" in the night sky detectable despite the darkness. All signs taken collectively, methinks Guam is overdue for a serious or big quake. |

#5 My guess is gap. We have not had a deep one like this for quite a while |

#4 I'll have to look up the historicals, but that appears to be on the main Aleutian/Alaskan subduction zone fault. Is it in a 'gap' (time & space) or near relatively recent big ones? |

#3 Thanks for the concern, Barbara. We were fortunate not to have any injuries in this event. Of course, we put real reinforcing steel in our concrete up here, unlike other places. |
