Kurds bomb strongholds of al-Qaeda in Aleppo, ISIS in Raqqa
2016-01-31
KOBANE – Amid their continuous military campaign against Islamist groups in northern Syria, Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) attacked strongholds of the Nusra Front, Syria’s branch of al-Qaeda, in Aleppo and the Islamic State (ISIS) in Raqqa province, military sources reported on Saturday.

The Kurdish forces bombed Nusra headquarters in the northern countryside of Aleppo. At least five militants were killed and several more wounded.

“We launched an operation against one of the main strongholds for terrorists of al-Nusra Front in Aleppo on Saturday,” a spokesman for the YPG told ARA News.

“Heavy artillery and mortar fire were used in the operation, during which three Nusra vehicles and a communication center were destroyed,” the source reported, adding that dead bodies of six militants were found subsequent to the attack and that eight others were wounded and taken as hostages.

“These operations are aimed at expelling Islamists from the northern province of Aleppo,” the YPG official told ARA News.

Also on Saturday, clashes broke out between the Kurdish YPG forces and militant fighters of ISIS near Ain Issa town in the northwestern countryside of Raqqa.

“Clashes erupted between our forces and ISIS terrorists after we hit headquarters of the terror group in Abdul-Razaq village east of Ain Issa with several artillery shells,” YPG member Sarhad Abbas told ARA News on the phone.

“Three ISIS terrorists were killed and two others were taken as hostages in Saturday’s clashes,” Abbas said, adding that the hostages will be used to put pressure on the extremist group to release activists arrested in Raqqa.
