| China: Missiles have been on South China Sea island for years |

| [CNN] Chinese sea and air defenses on a disputed South China Sea island have been in place for years, Beijing says, but reports of their existence Wednesday alarmed the country's Asian neighbors. Taiwan's Defense Ministry said Wednesday it had confirmed that surface-to-air missiles had been deployed on Woody Island, part of the Paracel Islands chain in the hotly disputed sea. U.S. officials told CNN that commercial satellite imagery showed the deployment of missile batteries. |
