‘Mosul dam could fail at any time, killing 1m people’
2016-03-04
[Dhaka Tribune] Iraqi engineers involved in building the djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
dam 30 years ago have warned that the risk of its imminent collapse and the consequent corpse count could be even worse than reported.

They pointed out that pressure on the dam’s compromised structure was building up rapidly as winter snows melted and more water flowed into the reservoir, bringing it up to its maximum capacity, while the sluice gates normally used to relieve that pressure were jammed shut.

#11  ISIS tried to retake the dam today.

#10  Who is currently downstream and why aren't they moving out of the floodplain? Are they really farmers taking advantage of the fertile soil? Seems unlikely in that area.

#9  Teton Dam Failure video Two minutes of explanation, then about 40 seconds of flooding.

At 11:55 a.m. MDT (UTC-17:55), the crest of the dam sagged and collapsed into the reservoir; two minutes later the remainder of the right-bank third of the main dam wall disintegrated. Over 2,000,000 cubic feet per second (57,000 m3/s) of sediment-filled water emptied through the breach into the remaining 6 miles (10 km) of the Teton River canyon, after which the flood spread out and shallowed on the Snake River Plain. By 8:00 p.m. that evening, the reservoir had completely emptied, although over two-thirds of the dam wall remained standing. Wikipedia

Only 11 dead, but this was in eastern Idaho.

#7  Between geology, war, lack of maintenance, and few workers, it is my professional opinion that they are fooked.

#6  Years back there were reports that the Aswan Dam was structurally unsound. A cry went out to get the CIA to do a study. The response, 'we've already done one.' Five will get you ten that the CIA also has a study on the Mosul Dam.

#3  "I went to visit the site and saw what kind of stone there was there. A lot of gypsum and anhydrite, which are very soluble. I was really concerned; I told the director general. He said: ‘Don’t worry. This is all being taken care of.’"

"By Saddam's Moustache, it will be fine!"

#2  with a 20-metre-high flood wave hitting the city of Mosul and then rolling on down the Tigris valley through Tikrit and Samarra to Baghdad.

Flush twice.

#1  I doubt the Kurds will be too bothered as much of the land flooded was Kurdish and hardly any Kurds are at risk downstream.
