ISIS troops attack Syrian Army HQ in Homs
2016-03-30
[ARA News] HOMS ــ Radical group of the Islamic State (ISIS) launched Tuesday an offensive on the regime’s army forces in Syria’s province of Homs, killing at least eight soldiers and wounding dozens more, local sources reported.

Speaking to ARA News in Homs, rights activist Amr al-Mousa said that ISIS carried out a suicide operation against the regime’s army in the vicinity of Mount Jubail, southwest of the strategic Christian town of al-Qaryatain, killing eight soldiers and wounding dozens others.

The hardline group used a SUV loaded with explosives in its attack, according to the source.

“On Tuesday midnight, ISIS launched another attack on the regime’s forces in the area, causing the death of over ten soldiers,” al-Mousa said, pointing out that ISIS has targeted strongholds of the Syria regime’s army with heavy and medium weapons in a bid to prevent their progress.

In the meantime, Russian warplanes conducted dozens of air raids on Homs and its surrounding villages in addition to the vicinity of Mount Jubail.

Syrian army forces were able to control the hill of Hazm al-Gharbiyat in the mountain range of al-Hazm southwestern the Qaryatain town on Monday midnight.

Syrian army forcesــ supported by Russian air forceــ seek to take over the key town of al-Qaryatain, trying to achieve a new victory in the northern countryside of Homs at the expense of ISIS, especially after taking over the historic city of Palmyra days ago.

Subsequent to taking over Palmyra earlier last year, ISIS has been expanding its control over key areas in Homs province, including the Christian town of Qaryatainــwhich links south Syria with its north.

In August 2015, the militant group abducted about 220 civilians, including at least 60 Christians, after seizing the key town al-Qaryatain in the countryside of Homs, according to local activists.
