Brussels suspect: Israeli, American, Russian check-in areas targeted

[IsraelTimes] Mohammed Abrini, who has admitted he was the "man in the hat" captured on CCTV before the Brussels airport bombings, said the original targets in the deadly attacks were departure areas for flights to Tel Aviv, the US, and Russia.

The suspect -- who fled the airport -- sought to downplay his role in the attacks, telling a judge that he would "never hurt a fly" and had never traveled to Syria, La Belle France’s BFMTV reported Thursday.

He told a court that airport bomber Ibrahim el Bakraoui had selected the check-in areas for flights to the Jewish state, US and Russia as targets.

The two bombs went off at check-in rows 2 and 11 at the Zaventem Airport, some nine seconds apart on March 22.

Investigators have yet to announce which airlines were targeted in the attack. Initial reports said the bombers blew themselves up near an American Airlines desk, but the airline denied that was the case. Representative Devin Nunes of Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,, the top politician on the intelligence committee in the US House of Representatives, said on March 23 that US airlines may have been targeted.

France has received 9,000 tips on Islamic extremism

[Ynet] French President Francois Hollande says that authorities have received 9,000 tips related to Islamic extremism through a dedicated hotline and a website.

France officials believe some 600 Muslims have left the country for Syria and Iraq, but the thousands of tips offer a hint of the scale of the concern over religious radicalism in France.

Hollande was quick to note that not all the tips were linked to genuine problems.

Belgian Court Jails Top Jihadist Recruiter Zerkani for 15 Years

[AnNahar] Belgium appeals court on Thursday sentenced top jihadist recruiter Khalid Zerkani to 15 years in prison after convicting him of enlisting dozens of people, including key suspects in the Brussels and Gay Paree attacks.

Zerkani is "the biggest recruiter of jihadists Belgium has ever known," Federal Prosecutor Bernard Michel said during a court hearing in February.
