80 Taliban Killed, 50 Injured In Kunduz Fighting

[Tolo News] At least 80 holy warriors have been killed and more than 50 others maimed in fighting between Afghan cops and the Taliban in Kunduz province, said local security officials.

"As a result of several hours of fighting, 80 holy warriors have been killed and more than 50 others maimed and Afghan cops seized a large number weapons from the Taliban," said Sayed Qurban Musavi, chief of the 20th Pamir Battalion staff.

The fighting started on Friday morning, when hundreds of holy warriors stormed Kunduz city, the provincial center, and several provinces from different directions.

"The enemies of Islam and Afghanistan, once again attacked Kunduz from different directions around 4:00 am on Friday. Our security forces however responded the attack with an iron fist. We have inflected heavy casualties on the Taliban," said Asadullah Omer, Kunduz governor.

The fighting between Afghan forces and the Taliban is still underway in four districts of the province and on the outskirts of Kunduz city.

"We will continue our operations till the complete elimination of the Taliban. Security forces have captured several villages from the Taliban and several of our soldiers have received injuries in the fighting," said Mohammad Qasim Jangal Bagh, Kunduz police chief.

The 20th Battalion said that two local commanders of the Taliban-- Shafiq and Malem Sher-- were also among those killed.
