Kurdish militants reportedly shoot down Turkish security forces helicopter
2016-05-16
[WAPO] ISTANBUL -- They were used to stalk Russian helicopters in Afghanistan, and the United States has worked hard to keep them out of chaotic Syria. But now Kurdish guerrillas battling Turkey's security forces may now have shoulder-fired missiles -- an acquisition analysts say will seriously challenge Turkish air power and potentially intensify fighting in the region.

On Saturday, media affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a leftist militant group battling the Turkish state, posted a video purporting to show a fighter downing a Cobra attack helicopter with a man-portable air-defense system -- or MANPADS -- in the mountains of southeastern Turkey on Friday morning. Arms observers said this is the first time they have seen PKK fighters successfully using MANPADS in their four-decade fight against the Turks.

Reportedly a Russian SA-18.

Potential source.

#10  I would say it boils down to who are they getting money from?
But if Putin thought of it he's do it.

#8  It's a balancing act. Overestimate your enemy, and you get the Obama Doctrine. Underestimate, and you end up with the Second Lebanon War.

#7  IMO, you [Americans] are giving your enemies, and I don't mean the Russians, too much credit.

#6  Yes indeed. Benghazi may have very well been a race to the MANPAD's and the Russian won.

#5  What would you do in his place?

Nothing different. I'll give him credit for using a proven strategy.

#4  Vlad will stop at nothing to fracture the NATO alliance.

(a) What would you do in his place?
(b) Would he go into women WC claiming he feels female?

#3  The Russians Soviets sponsored and armed the PYD as far back as the early 1960s (ergo the PYD supports the PKK.) So it's not like this is a new strategy.

#2  Yes. Russia Wields the Kurdish Weapon.

Vlad will stop at nothing to fracture the NATO alliance.

#1  Iraq, Syria, Iran, and Libya bought 'em.

Also a good possibility, if it didn't come from Iraqi, Syrian or Libyan stocks, the Russians might have helped the Kurds obtain them.
