Kurd forces rescue 350 in Mosul
2016-05-22
[ARA News] ERBIL – Hundreds of civilians who escaped Iraqi territory held by the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) received assistance by the Peshmerga forces of Iraqi Kurdistan, local sources reported on Saturday.

After fleeing ISIS-held areas in southern Mosul of Nineveh province, more than 350 Iraqi Arabs arrived in the Makhmur district to receive aid from the Kurdish Peshmerga troops.

“We saw hundreds of people arriving in Makhmur on Saturday after escaping the southern countryside of Mosul. They were mostly women, children and elderly. We tried to provide them with as much assistance as possible,” a Peshmerga officer told ARA News in Makhmur.

The displaced civilians have reportedly fled the villages of Halawat Sufla, Halawat Ulia and Qarraj.

“They received shelter and basic supplies in the Karaw town of Makhmur district. They are now safe from any ISIS threat,” the Kurdish official said.

Speaking to ARA News, head of Nineveh media centre Raafat al-Zarari reported that the number of civilians who fled ISIS territory in Mosul and Hawija on Saturday exceeded 400.

“They all headed to the Peshmerga headquarters seeking a safe haven,” he said. “They are now in Karaw town and tomorrow they’ll be transferred to the Dibkeh Camp within Makhmur.”

Al-Zarari added that thousands of people are still stranded in the ISIS-held areas in northwestern Iraq “waiting for an opportunity to escape”.
