| Two killed, three wounded in Narathiwat gun attack |

| [The Nation] A village chief and his assistant were killed and three others, including a paramilitary volunteer ranger, were wounded in a drive-by shooting in Narathiwat province on Monday night. The five victims had been digging a well to help villagers handle the drought when militants approached in a pick-up truck and opened fire at them with an M16 assault rifle. Provincial governor Sitthichai Sakda joined investigators yesterday as they inspected the scene in Joh I Rong district. Police, who waited to inspect the scene in the morning for security reasons, collected 17 spent M16 cartridges as evidence. Police suspect that rebels behind the attack are involved in the insurgency in the region. |
