| Russian NCO dies in car bomb attack in Homs |

| [ARA News ] DAMASCUS – A Russian military officer has died after being wounded in an explosion in the Syrian central province of Homs, officials said on Sunday. Andrey Timoshenkov died of his injuries after a car bomb attack hit an aid convoy that was heading to Homs, Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement. “Sergeant Andrey Timoshenkov, who was escorting a humanitarian convoy of the Russian Reconciliation Center, has stopped a car rigged with explosives by opening fire at it with small arms. Andrey received injuries incompatible with life in the explosion of the vehicle driven by a suicide bomber,” the ministry said. Officials said that doctors at the Russian Hmeimim airbase in Syria’s Latakia province “fought for Timoshenkov’s life for over 24 hours”, but he passed away on Thursday, June 16. Timoshenkov was granted a “posthumous state award” for his sacrifice, local media said. According to the Russian media, the deceased serviceman was a marine from Russia’s exclave Kaliningrad Region. At least 11 Russian forces have been killed since Moscow started its military operations in Syria on September 30, 2015, in support of the regime of President Bashar al-Assad. |
