UN report finds new record of 65 million people displaced in 2015
2016-06-20
On Monday, the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR unveiled its annual Global Trends Report, which found that persecution and conflict in places like Syria and Afghanistan raised the total number of refugees and internally displaced people worldwide to a record 65.3 million at the end of last year.
Move over "Palestinians"

The business of UNHCR is displaced people, and business is good.

#2  I did preview, but missed the 41 million came from the Slimes article, not the radio. The bulk of these people — nearly 41 million — were still living within their own countries. That was part of the nugget, not part of my comment.

#1  The bulk of these people — nearly 41 million — were still living within their own countries. I heard on the radio this morning that Turkey has accepted the largest number of refugees - three million. That seemed odd, given the 65 million number, so I did a little looking around. Buried in a Slimes article was this nugget:

Never before had the United Nations documented so many “internally displaced persons,” as they are officially defined. The largest numbers were inside Syria and Iraq, but insurgencies in Nigeria and Somalia also scattered millions inside those countries.

So the official definition was changed/expanded, to 'move the goalposts'.

I, myself, was 'displaced' just two years ago! But I am OK, now. Thank you.

OK, so it was a voluntary displacement. And my employer paid my relocation expenses. But now I have to retire where my grandchildren live!
