| Maoist militant killed in Surigao encounter |

| [Gulf Today] A militant from the communist New People's Army was killed in an clash with government security forces in Surigao del Norte province. Brigadier General Restituto Padilla said a combined team of soldiers and policemen killed the insurgent in an encounter in a remote village in the town of Malimono. Citing initial reports, Padilla said a team of soldiers and policemen were on Monday morning sent to check on the complaints that NPA members were extorting food and money from local villagers. After a brief heavy exchange of gunfire, the miltants fled and left behind the body of their slain comrade along with an AK47 rifle. This was the first reported battle between Philippine security forces and the NPA since Duterte on Saturday lifted the unilateral cease-fire he had declared with the Maoist militants on July 25. |
