2016-08-05
On a charted "Sh*tholes of the World" tour package
A group of foreign tourists were attacked in the western Herat province of Afghanistan earlier today with preliminary reports suggesting at least four of them were wounded.

There are no reports regarding the identity of the foreigners who were on a tour in Herat province.

An official in the Ministry of Interior (MoI) confirmed that the incident took place Chesht-e-Sharif district of Herat province earlier today.

The official further added that the tourists were on their way to Herat from the central Bamyan province when their vehicle was ambushed by unknown gunmen.

However an official in the 207th Corps of the Afghan National Army said at least six people were wounded in the attack.

No group has so far claimed responsibility behind the incident.

The Taliban militants and insurgents belonging to the other militant groups are actively operating in a number of the remote districts of Herat province, including Chesht-e-Sharif district.

Both Bamyan and the western Herat province are hosting scores of foreign tourists as the two provinces are among the historical sites of the country.

The Bamyan province is home to some of the oldest sites including the world’s largest Buddha statue which was destroyed by the Taliban in early 2001 while Herat is home to the oldest structures and monuments of the world.
