Iraqi forces capture Hammam al-Alil

(IraqiNews.com) Nineveh – Iraqi joint security forces had liberated the village of Hammam al-Alil south of Mosul, Nineveh, according to a senior commander at the security operation targeting to free the province of Islamic State fighters.

Lt.Gen Raed Shaker Jawdat, head of the federal police, told Iraq’s state TV on Sunday that, “The security forces have liberated the entire village of Hammam Al-Ali, and that stability and security have been restored to the region,” adding that, “Petroleum and other vital facilities became under security control.”

The top commander of the operation, codenamed ‘We Are Coming Nineveh”, Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir Yarallah, had said earlier on Saturday that security forces entered the village and raised the Iraqi flag.

A senior Islamic State leader in Nineveh, nicknamed Abu Hamza Al-Ansari al-Jazairi , was killed in battles at the nearby villages of Erbeed and Qabr al-Abd, according to head of the Nineveh operations in the joint security forces, Maj. Gen. Najm Abdullah al-Jabouri.

Iraqi forces, assisted by popular paramilitary forces and US air forces, are proceeding with a major operation that set on mid October to liberate the city of Mosul, ISIS last stronghold in Iraq. The extremist group has reportedly sustained severe losses in lives and equipment over the past few weeks.

Apparently Hammam Al-Alil was a do over
[AlManar] Iraqi forces retook a key town from the Takfiri ISIL group Monday, a crucial objective on the southern front of the operation to wrest back the city of Mosul.

Federal police, army and elite interior ministry forces established full control over Hamam al-Alil, the last town of note on the way to Mosul from the south, AFP reporters said.

It lies on the west bank of the Tigris river, about 15 kilometers (nine miles) southeast of Mosul.

Iraqi forces have already entered Mosul from the east and were moving close to the city limits from the north on Monday but have some distance to cover on the southern front.

Life quickly resumed in Hamam al-Alil, an AFP cameraman reported, with some residents re-opening shops and other bathing in the town’s sulfur springs.

Soldiers could be seen helping some displaced civilians with their bags.

The recapture of the town clears the way for Iraqi forces to push further north and move to within striking distance of the southern neighborhoods of Mosul.

Mosul’s southern approach is home to the international airport, a vast military area and a large base that Iraqi forces were forced to flee when ISIL took over the city in June 2014.
