Bomb detonates in Benghazi military funeral
2016-11-17
Benghazi, 15 November 2016:

A military funeral was car-bombed today in Benghazi killing a soldier and injuring at least 14 other mourners.

The cortege of one of the ten troops killed yesterday in the Ganfouda assault was on its way to the Kuwaifiyah cemetery in north-east Benghazi when a vehicle parked outside a park at Budezirah blew up. The solider killed in this blast, who has not been named, was a colonel from the same unit as yesterday’s victim. Two of those injured today are reportedly in a serious condition in Jalaa hospital.

It is unclear if the explosives in the car were detonated remotely or if a suicide bomber was inside it. Either way, this was a demonstration of the terrorists’ ability to strike outside of the Ganfouda, Sabri and Suq Al-Hud areas where they are now supposedly confined.

The attack is reminiscent of others when Benghazi was sinking into a chaos of killings in 2013. The very first funeral bombing that year was of mourners leaving the Hawari cemetery after the burial of Kamal Bazaza, an intelligence officer who had been blown up in his car earlier in the day. That attack left one man dead and six injured.

It has not been possible to confirm a report that a second car bomb was discovered today elsewhere in Benghazi and made safe.
