U.S. Navy Accelerating Stealth Sub-Hunter |
2016-11-21 |
he Pentagon's research arm is extending testing of its sub-hunting drone able to travel autonomously for up to 90 days using sensors and sonar technology to search for enemy submarines and other airborne and undersea threats. The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, or DARPA, has awarded an $8.5 million contract extension to Reston, Virginia-based Leidos for continued test phase development of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel, or ACTUV program. |

#4 Parking a few 1000 submersible drone stealth Roombas on the sea bottom and having them just listen & wait for further orders might be cheaper than creating far fewer devices engineered to travel long distances. Read Murray Leinster's old SF story, "The Wabbler" |

#2 I think these are more of a powerplant and decisioning control systems technology upgrade to the 'fire-and-forget' weapons than downsizing current attack-rated craft. The hydrologic survey data provided a baseline for autonomous 'terrain-following' navigation. Early units will probably be turned to the task of 'bottoming' or subsurface feature mapping before they are weaponized. |

#1 The Navy already has those, they're called fast attack submarines. What do you think all those "hydrologic surveys" were. |
