[AlAhram] A group of gunnies killed eight army personnel in an attack on a military checkpoint in the restive northern Sinai region, where forces are battling a Death Eater insurgency, a military front man has said. Assailants in 4x4 vehicles "laden with large amounts of explosives" attacked the checkpoint in the border region late on Thursday, front man Mohammed Samir said in a statement. A subsequent exchange of fire with forces and the kaboom of the car and a separate bomb led to the death of eight members of army forces and three Death Eaters. A number of Death Eaters were also maimed in the firefight. "The armed forces asserts that such villainous acts will not discourage it from performing its duty of eliminating terrorism and continuing to safeguard the homeland," the statement read. Forces were combing the area in search for suspects.
No one has grabbed credit for the assault, in which eight troops were initially reported killed. The official says three more slain soldiers were found on Friday morning outside the restive city of el-Arish. In Thursday night's attack, a suicide boom-mobileer and dozens of heavily armed faceless myrmidons stormed a checkpoint manned by some 30 troops. At least 12 troops were reported maimed. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media. | |
