Iowa Man Sentenced in Case Related to Guns Sent to Lebanon
2016-12-13
[AnNahar] An Iowa man has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to the shipping of guns to Leb.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Bassem Afif Herz was given the punishment Monday in federal court in Cedar Rapids. The 31-year-old Cedar Rapids man pleaded guilty in March to conspiring to deal in firearms without a license and illegally shipping firearms. He also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering and violating a federal law that limits the exporting of weapons.

Besides eight years and one month of prison, Herz must serve three years of supervised release after his term.

Herz was among several relatives convicted in the case, which revolved around dozens of guns illegally shipped from Cedar Rapids to Leb.

#3  Isn't there a sarlacc pit in Cedar Rapids?

#2  But where did the weapons shipped from Iowa come from?

If I was a tinfoil-hatter, I go with a Lebanese version of Fast & Furious. Otherwise, I'd say it was the work of a ethnic-Lebanese crime syndicate.

#1  Interesting tidbit. While Iowa is not your normal terrorist trafficking hotbed, Cedar Rapids is home to the Mother Mosque, first in the States. It also is home to an established Lebanese/Syrian community from the turn of the last century, and various guest imams of concern have been there and once hosted a starving student working his way through college by forging documents that included some 9-11 players. He was deported to Morrocco years ago. But where did the weapons shipped from Iowa come from? It's not a port but is a trucking mecca with several large freighting firms based there, giving employment to immigrants and refugees over the years. There has to be more to this.
