Jara MANILA: At least 10 members of the Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf ...also known as al-Harakat al-Islamiyya, an Islamist terror group based in Jolo, Basilan and Zamboanga. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the group has carried out bombings, kidnappings, murders, head choppings, and extortion in their uniquely Islamic attempt to set up an independent Moslem province in the Philippines. Abu Sayyaf forces probably number less than 300 cadres. The group is closely allied with remnants of Indonesia's Jemaah Islamiya and has loose ties with MILF and MNLF who sometimes provide cannon fodder... terror group were killed while six others were maimed in the latest encounter with government forces on the island province of Sulu in restive Mindanao, the military reported on Monday. Major Filemon Tan, the front man of the military’s Western Mindanao Command, said the latest casualty figure for the Abu Sayyaf was validated by intelligence information as well as civilians on the ground. Earlier, Tan said three soldiers were killed and 17 others maimed when government forces clashed with about 150 Lions of Islam in a mountain "barangay" (village) in the town of Patikul, Sulu on Saturday morning. He added Philippine Air Force helicopter gunships and artillery fire supported the soldiers in the heavy fighting that lasted about two hours when the Death Eaters withdrew. The Death Eaters were headed by Radullah Hapiron, the one-armed leader and one of the most desperados in Mindanao, Tan said. He added government forces remained focused on their "search and destroy" campaign against the Abu Sayyaf on orders of President Rodrigo "Rody" Duterte since July.
