California Could Cut Off Feds In Response To Trump Threats
2017-01-29
[SANFRANCISCO.CBSLOCAL] The state of Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, is studying ways to suspend financial transfers to Washington after the Trump administration threatened to withhold federal money from sanctuary cities, KPIX 5 has learned.

Officials are looking for money that flows through Sacramento to the federal government that could be used to offset the potential loss of billions of dollars’ worth of federal funds if President Trump makes good on his threat to punish cities and states that don’t cooperate with federal agents’ requests to turn over undocumented immigrants colonists, a senior government source in Sacramento said.

The federal funds pay for a variety of state and local programs from law enforcement to homeless shelters.

"California could very well become an organized non-payer," said Willie Brown, Jr, a former speaker of the state Assembly in an interview recorded Friday for KPIX 5’s Sunday morning news. "They could recommend non-compliance with the federal tax code."

California is among a handful of so-called "donor states," which pay more in taxes to the federal Treasury than they receive in government funding.

#17  The only way th idea of a donor state works is if you count the Federal Income taxes paid by residents of California. The only way California could possibly control that would be to force companies that withhold on behalf of residents to not give the money over to the feds and open themselves up to all sorts of federal reprisals and confiscations (no company in their right mind would open that door).

So this is nonsense as far as I can figure.

#16  There is a movement for much of rural northern California to break away. If California withholds funding from the Feds, expect much of the "State of Jefferson" counties to do the same to the state. This could get interesting fast.

#13  Let them try. Will be a fantastic show.

Would IRS just seize state assets in bank accounts?

#10  "Malfeasance :the commission (as by a public official) of a wrongful or unlawful act involving or affecting the performance of one's duties ". Merriam Webster

Perhaps it's time to charge mayors and governors for gross violation of the public trust through conspiracy to commit seditious acts? Just the whiff of such actions would have a profound effect on the domestic enemies of the Constitution.

Seattle or Pearl.

#8  I ain't messing with the IRS just to make Willie Brown happy.

But, B, do NOT mess with Camp Pendleton. The goons that run Los Angeles and Orange counties would like nothing better than to let their developer buddies rape that land with their bulldozers. You'd be doing them a favor and you don't want to do that. Same thing goes for Miramar Marine Corps Air Base and where else would you station all those Navy ships in San Diego Bay? There must be better ways to put the hurt on California politicians than pulling out the military.

#5  Something a bit more subtle. Since they're keen on leaving the Union anyway. Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC).

#4  Another point, what exactly do they do when Trump announces that since California isn't sending in the tax money required by law, they shall receive no Federal benefit programs? I can just imagine what happens when the Black communities in LA wind up without food-stamps because of illegal immigrants.

#2  I'm going to guess that given how important CA's electoral votes are to Dems, there are way more dollars flowing from the Feds to CA than the other way around. Also, CA doesn't have any more headroom to raise taxes. They might want to think long and hard before they go down this road.
