German state bans mosque group after imam calls for killings

[Ynet] German state officials say they've banned an Islamic cultural association that ran a mosque in the central German town of Kassel due to extremist comments. Hesse state Interior Minister Peter Beuth said Thursday that the Almadinah Islamic Culture Association was banned because the group's leading imam had, among other things, repeatedly called for the killing of infidels in his sermons. Investigations by the authorities also confirmed that several members of the mosque had already left Germany for Syria to join extremist Islamic fighters there.

Portugal quizzes Moroccan IS suspect extradited from Germany

[Ynet] Portugal's attorney general says investigators are preparing to question a Moroccan man extradited from Germany who is suspected of providing financing and recruitment assistance to the Islamic State group.

The attorney general's office said in a statement that the man arrived in Portugal from Germany on Thursday after Portuguese authorities issued a European arrest warrant for him.

The statement said the man is suspected of belonging to and supporting a terrorist organization, which it named as the Islamic State group.

Around 250 feared dead in new Med migrant boat sinkings: NGO

[AlAhram] Around 250 African migrants are feared to have drowned in the Mediterranean after a rescue boat found two partially submerged rubber dinghies off Libya, a spokeswoman for the NGO which operates the vessel said Thursday. Laura Lanuza of Spanish charity Pro-Activa Open Arms said its boat had recovered five floating corpses close to the dinghies, about 15 miles off the Libyan coast. She told AFP that they would typically have been carrying 120-140 migrants each.

On December 31, 2015, large-scale sexual assaults and thefts against women took place in numerous German cities including Cologne, where around 1,000 men descended on the square next to the central train station and proceeded to corral, rob and assault individual women. Over 1,200 criminal charges were subsequently made, around 500 of which pertained to sexual assault.
