Turkish rebel group attacks Qabasin in Aleppo
2017-04-05
[ARA News] The Turkey-backed Islamist group Ahrar al-Sham on Tuesday besieged the city of Qabasin in northern Aleppo with the goal to arrest the head of the Kurdish rebel group Liwa Ahfad Salahaddin–affiliated to the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

At least eight Kurdish fighters were captured by the Islamic Movement of Ahrar al-Sham.

“The Ahrar al-Sham militants arrested several members of the Kurdish Liwa Ahfad Salahaddin battalion at a checkpoint in the vicinity of Qabasin after the Kurdish fighters insulted the leadership of Ahrar,” Ömer Özkizilcik, Middle East-Analyst, told ARA News.

“Ahrar al-Sham militants also stormed the house of Abu Hamza and arrested his companions,” he said.

A few hours later, the dispute was solved and the 8 fighters were released along with their commander.

However, the Kurdish-led city of Qabasin remained under siege by Ahrar al-Sham militants.

The Liwa Ahfad Salahaddin group, established in early 2016, is supported by Turkey created and is opposed to the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Assad.

The group is named after historical Muslim leader Saladin, the first sultan of Egypt and Syria, and the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. The group has minimal support among Kurds and only has a small number of fighters.
