Pro-Jewish Polish Army sergeant spared by Catholic Priest at Auschwitz

A message of sacrifice appropriate for today possibly.

#7  Just to set the record straight, from the article: "Gajowniczek was a Polish political prisoner who had been arrested because he was aiding the Jewish resistance in Poland, although he was not a Jew himself."

Franciszek Gajowniczek was not a Jew. I am sure that St. Maximilian would have done the same for anyone who begged for mercy because of his family.

#6  Lovely and appropriate for the day, Besoeker. If more, both Jew and gentile, had refused assent, things would have been very different.

#5  Don't be too hard on yourself Zen. I suspect I would have remained silent and melted deep into the POW formation. Courage clearly defined, without question.

Or any day, for those of us (me!) a little lacking in backbone. Had an icon of him as my wallpaper for the a while (not that it's done me much good).

Interesting forum, though. Perish the thought that the folks who took such excellent care of Poland's architecture and infrastructure might not have been equally gentle toward her people.

The Germans marschieren down Poland,
But gar nichts is harmed or gestohlen!
Those generous Niemcy
Who spared us Jack Dempsey's?
Frank Davis sez, "Naturally Nolan."

#2  When I first heard the story of St. Maximilian Kolbe's sacrifice, I thought "Wow. He sacrificed his life so the other guy could live what - another week? Maybe a month?". Turns out that the man that St. Maximilian died for was present when St. Maximilian was canonized by St John Paul II.
