One policeman killed, 4 injured in attack on Egypt's St Catherine security checkpoint
2017-04-19
[AlAhram] A policeman was killed and four others were maimed at Mount Catherine's security checkpoint late Tuesday in South Sinai after an exchange of fire with unknown holy warriors, Egypt’s ministry of interior said.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, a group of gunnies opened fire on the checkpoint on a road leading up to the Saint Catherine monastery on top of the mountain.

"The police forces exchanged fire with the gunnies until they gained control and forced the gunnies to flee," the statement added.

Egypt’s health ministry front man Khaled Megahed told Ahram Online the four injured coppers were transferred to Sharm El-Sheikh's international hospital. The body of the policeman who was killed was transferred to St. Catherine hospital.

The attack on the security checkpoint near the Saint Catherine monastery, which is one of the oldest Christian monasteries and the main tourist attraction in South Sinai, comes two weeks after the bombings of Orthodox Churches in Alexandria and Tanta killed over 45 people on Palm Sunday.

Islamic State claims attack on Egypt police checkpoint

...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
holy warrior group has grabbed credit for an attack on an Egyptian police checkpoint near the famed Saint Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai late Tuesday which authorities said killed one policeman and maimed four.

The forces of Evil opened fire from an elevated hilltop overlooking the police checkpoint just outside the monastery, which is located in a remote desert and mountainous area in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula, according to a statement by the Interior Ministry.

After an exchange of gunfire, the attackers expeditiously departed at a goodly pace, the ministry said, adding that some of the gunnies were maimed in the shootout.

No further details were immediately available.

According to SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks online activity of krazed killers, the IS-affiliated Amaq news agency announced that the group’s forces of Evil carried out the attack near Saint Catherine. This is the first time the IS has attacked a monastery.

It comes shortly before a planned visit by the Vatican Pope Francis to Egypt next week.
