2017-05-04
[Libya Observer] A Libyan-flagged vessel laden with weapons and ammunition was seized in international waters Monday, EU Naval Force Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR Med) has reported.

The EUNAVFOR Med, also known as Operation Sophia, said in a statement Tuesday that German ship "Rhein" carried out an inspection on the Libyan motor vessel "El Mukhtar" and found several types of weapons.

"The Lithuanian boarding team reached the vessel by zodiacs and once on board, the team found several types of weapons, including Machine Guns, AK47 rifles, RPG bullets, RPG launchers, mortar grenades and ammunitions." The statement read.

The search was conducted in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2292 (2016).

The EUNAVFOR Med did not give further information regarding the destination of the vessel and the group that was behind it.
