Baltimore Restaurant Owner Says 30 Employees Left Due To ICE Crackdown
2017-06-27
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The owner of one of Canton’s most popular waterfront restaurants, The Boathouse, says more than 30 immigrant workers left in fear after a Department of Homeland Security worker hand-delivered a letter demanding documentation of their immigration status.

That stunned the eatery’s customers.

"It seems like terrorizing people who are trying to work at the restaurant," says customer Michelle Zhang. "It’s not only bad for for the business but it’s bad for the families."

"If that many left... are they not following the policy?" asks Ryan Horan, another customer. "Are they not doing it the way they should be doing it?"

Owner Gene Singleton insists his business was in compliance with immigration law.

#11  Checked the building out on their website. Based on the decor and client 'target', looks pretty upscale and successful.

He should have known not play fast and loose with the I-9's.

#10  Not really. One I worked at was supposed to have 2 dish, 3 prep in the back, 4-5 in the kitchen, bartender, greeter, and say 5 wait per shift. IIRC, at least twenty tables and a bar area with cocktail tables, small patio out front with three cocktail tables. Holidays and occasions would require more on a shift. Lot of part time, including me, on account of school. Then as OreganGuy says, take into account HC Mandate.

#9  "Isn't 30 employees a lot for a restaurant?"

Not if they are all part-time to avoid health care mandates.

#7  Excellent! Baltimore's young black male unemployment rate is then 30% range. Consider it an opportunity and a challenge.

#6  Something else smells.

I wonder how the letter was delivered. The article gives me the impression of squad of DHS gunmen storming the restaurant at 6 o'clock rush; the owner pleading his case as 30 workers escape through the olde coal loading dock as stunned eaters wonder if they are in the robbery scene in Pulp Fiction.

#4  Yeah.... insisting his business was in compliance but you lose 30 employees.

Something smells here and it ain't the fish.

How about squashing some of the street corner crime?

#2  Something tells me he is (or was) paying much less than that.
